Golf has been played at Cruden Bay since as early as 1791, with the present Championship Course commissioned by the Great North of Scotland Railway and designed by Old Tom Morris, opening in 1899. Set among towering dunes on Scotland's northeast coast, 23 miles north of Aberdeen, it is consistently ranked among the world's best links courses — No. 52 in the world per Golf Magazine (2015) and No. 29 by Golf Course Architecture magazine (2013) — and sits beside the ruins of Slains Castle, said to have inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula.
