Founded in 1886 with the present course built in 1897, Royal Lytham is unusual among Open Championship venues for opening with a par 3 and for being landlocked by housing rather than running along the open coast. It has hosted eleven Open Championships and two Ryder Cups, and is famous for the 206 bunkers scattered across its tight, tree-and-scrub-lined fairways.
